Known for their high potency and targeted results, it’s no surprise we’re big fans of serums at Skin Resus!
Serums are readily absorbed topical products with a high concentration of active ingredients that penetrate the skin quickly and effectively. There is a wide variety of serums available on the market, designed to help with different skincare concerns such as pigmentation, dehydration, acne and redness.
Which serum should I use?
There are many serums on the market and choosing one that suits can be tricky. We recommend and stock the Aspect Dr range, but there are some fabulous ones out there by Dermalogica, The Ordinary, SkinCeuticals, and Peace Out to name a few.
One size doesn’t fit all for serums (with the exception of perhaps a Hyaluronic based hydration serum or a standard vitamin C serum), so it’s important to find one that is targeting your specific concern from acne to fine lines, redness to skin laxity, or pigmentation to irritation.
When and how do I apply my serum?
Serums work best when applied to fresh, clean skin, so applying immediately after cleansing (and toning if you use a toner) is the ideal time to use your chosen serum.
Make sure you read the label; some serums, such as those with a retinol base, should only be applied at night. Some require a certain number of drops due to their potency, while others can require a full dropper worth of product, so be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Using more than the recommended amount won’t change the results, it could be damaging or just a waste product!
Can I use more than one serum?
Absolutely! We’ve seen great success with layering of serums that are targeting different concerns. One great duo is Aspect Dr Exfol A and Hyaluronic Serum which brings the benefits of exfoliating and hydration (tip: hydration serums are great for EVERYONE!).
It’s important to note that due to their concentrated nature and high levels of active ingredients, you should always check the label for contraindications to know if you can use a new serum with the other products or medications you are currently using. For example, using a vitamin A or retinol based serum whilst also using an acne serum and a topical prescription retinoid has the potential to cause peeling, redness, inflammation and damage to the skin.
Seal it in
The best way to finish up your skincare routine after serums is to apply your usual sunscreen in the morning or moisturiser at night to help lock in the serum for maximum benefits.
