Skin Lumps and Bumps

What is the best treatment for my skin blemish?

Skin lumps and bumps can pop up over time and are mostly harmless. Before any skin lesions are treated it is important they are assessed by a health professional to be sure they can safely be removed. Dr Main can provide full skin checks for skin cancer, and assess any spots of concern. Suspicious skin lesions should not be treated with laser, IPL, Fibrolift or cryotherapy. Common skin lumps include seborrhoeic keratoses, dermal naevi, sebaceous hypertrophy, solar keratoses, berry angiomas, xanthelasma and syringomas. Many of these can be effectively and safely treated with laser.

Treatments for Skin Lumps and Bumps

Fibrolift Pen

The Fibrolift pen is an alternate solution for small skin lumps and bumps. It uses electrical energy which creates a tiny arc to heat and remove blemishes. It is an excellent choice for small lesions such as skin tags in tricky locations – around the eyelids for example where the accuracy and safety of Fibrolift is useful.

Erbium Laser Spot Treatment

The erbium laser is the number one tool for removing many types of skin lumps and bumps. It is a precise tool that removes a very small amount of tissue and allows our doctors to accurately and safely treat the lump. Many of these require just a single treatment and healing time varies from 5 days to 2 weeks. Treatment with the erbium laser is only mildly uncomfortable in most cases and can be done without local anaesthetic.

It is not uncommon to treat many lumps in a single session – we often see people with many seborrhoeic keratoses covering both the face and body. These can be effectively treated.

Moles or naevi can also be treated with erbium laser, but multiple treatments may be required and recurrence is common. No suspicious mole should ever be treated with laser, and moles should be assessed by the doctor prior to any treatment.
