Acne Treatment

What is the Skin Resus Acne Treatment?

Acne is a hormonally-driven skin condition which causes inflammation in the oil glands of our skin. Excess sebum production, blocked pores, and overgrowth of bacteria lead to the characteristic blackheads, whiteheads, cysts and nodules of acne. If left unchecked these can then result in scarring. It affects over 80% of people, mostly in young adults but is also very common in women up to the age of 40.

At Skin Resus we have a zero-tolerance approach to acne. Our program involves combination therapy with effective topical medication, addressing hormonal factors, LED light, IPL and YAG laser treatment

Treatments for Acne

Blue and Red Light Therapy

Consists of both a blue and a red LED light treatment. The blue light targets and destroys skin bacteria, while the red light acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory reducing redness, cyst formation and scar potential, and stimulates healing and collagen production. We recommend two 20 minute sessions per week (one blue light, one red light) for 4 weeks.

How Light Treats Acne

The dual actions of LED light therapy are to reduce bacterial numbers and to limit inflammation. Blue light causes self-destruction of the main acne-forming bacteria P.acnes, and red light calms inflammation.

How Phototherapy Works

Light therapy works on all grades of acne, but is particularly useful for mild or moderate cases. The treatment consists of a course of LED light twice weekly for four weeks with less frequent maintenance sessions thereafter.

IPL

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy has emerged as an effective treatment option for acne and related skin concerns. Here’s a comprehensive overview of IPL for acne treatment:

How IPL Works for Acne

IPL uses broad-spectrum light to target and treat acne in several ways: Targeting bacteria: The blue light wavelength (420 nm) specifically targets and destroys acne-causing bacteria on the skin. Reducing inflammation: The yellow light (560 nm) and red light (590 nm) wavelengths help reduce inflammation associated with acne. Shrinking sebaceous glands: The light energy can help shrink overactive oil glands that contribute to acne formation.

Benefits of IPL for Acne

IPL offers several advantages for acne treatment: Multiple skin issues: It can address acne along with other skin concerns like hyperpigmentation and fine lines in a single treatment. Minimal downtime: IPL causes minimal damage to the top layer of skin, allowing for quicker recovery compared to some other treatments. Non-invasive: As a light-based therapy, it’s less invasive than some alternative acne treatments.

Effectiveness

Studies have shown promising results for IPL in treating acne. One study reported a 49% reduction in acne severity after four weekly IPL treatments. Another study found that 85% of patients had over 50% improvement in their acne lesions after twice-weekly treatments for 4 weeks.

Treatment Protocol

A typical IPL treatment course for acne involves:
  • 4-6 sessions, spaced a few weeks apart
  • Sessions lasting 15-60 minutes, depending on the treated area
  • Gradual increase in light intensity over the course of treatment

Considerations

While IPL can be effective for many people with acne, it’s important to note:
  • It works best for those with pale to light brown skin tones.
  • It may not be suitable for pregnant women, those on certain medications, or people with specific skin conditions.
  • Results can vary, and multiple treatments are usually necessary for optimal outcomes.

YAG Laser

The Nd:YAG (Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) laser is an effective treatment option for acne. It works by:

  • Penetrating deep into the skin to target overactive sebaceous glands.
  • Reducing acne inflammation through controlled heating effects
  • Stimulating collagen remodeling, which helps in long-term acne management

Effectiveness

  • Studies have shown positive results in treating active acne and acne scars.
  • One study reported that 42% of patients treated with the 1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser saw decreased inflammatory lesions, compared to 26% in the control group

Treatment Process

  • Typically involves 3-6 sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart.
  • For patients with skin of colour, treatments may be done 3-4 weeks apart.
  • The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with minimal discomfort and no need for anesthesia or cooling.

Benefits

  • Safe for all skin types, including tanned skin and skin of colour.
  • Can simultaneously treat acne and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  • May also improve the appearance of acne scars.

Considerations

  • Results may vary depending on acne severity and individual skin characteristics.
  • Multiple sessions are usually required for optimal results.
  • Should be performed by a qualified dermatologist or trained professional.

The Nd:YAG laser offers a non-invasive, effective option for acne treatment, particularly for those who haven’t responded well to traditional therapies or are looking for alternatives to oral medications.

Other information about Acne and Treatments

What causes Acne?

There are a number of factors which conspire to cause acne.

  • Excessive sebum (oil) production;
  • Skin cells that shed become abnormally sticky and clog up the hair follicles;
  • Increased number of the P. acnes skin bacterium; and
  • Skin inflammation.

Mild Acne

Acne falls into the “mild” category if you have fewer than 20 whiteheads or blackheads, fewer than 15 inflamed bumps, or fewer than 30 total lesions. Mild acne is usually treated with over-the-counter topical medicine. It may take up to eight weeks to see a significant improvement.

Moderate Acne

If you have 20 to 100 whiteheads or blackheads, 15 to 50 inflamed bumps, or 30 to 125 total lesions, your acne is considered moderate. Dermatologists usually recommend prescription medication for moderate to severe acne. It may take several weeks to notice an improvement, and your acne may appear to get worse before it gets better.

Severe (Cystic) Acne

People with severe cystic acne have multiple inflamed cysts and nodules. The acne may turn deep red or purple. It often leaves scars. Prompt treatment by a dermatologist can minimize scarring.

For a wholistic approach to acne our Doctors also recommend:

  • Daily Fish Oil Supplements;
  • The use of a good sunscreen that doesn’t block pores (many acne preparations make you more sun sensitive); and
  • Mineral makeup, which does not harbour bacteria or block pores
  • Low GI diet – see below for more information
  • Related to the low GI diet is the health of our gut – improving this can assist skin health; recommendations include higher fibre diets and probiotic intake.

A recent groundbreaking study has established that diet has a significant impact on acne. Here’s the Anti Acne Diet in a nutshell:

  • Eat lean red meat 3-4 times and fish twice a week (and red meat for lunch daily);
  • Choose low GI carbs: wholegrain breads, high-fibre cereals, past and legumes;
  • Aim for 3 serves of fruit and 5 serves of (low GI) vegetables a day;
  • Avoid sugary foods and drinks and limit takeaway, white bread, cakes and biscuits.
