Why Lip Treatment?
Lip treatments may address several concerns:
- Increasing lip size or restoring a previous lip size. As you age, your lips may get smaller or thinner, your philtrum (the groove between your upper lip and septum) may get longer and flatter and the lip tissue itself can show a deflated look with wrinkling of the red lip. We may also desire fuller lips where we have genetically fine or thin lips.
- Correcting the shape of your lips. It is common for your lips to be different sizes or shapes (asymmetrical). The perfect ratio of top to bottom lip is 1:1.5 and it is common to try and adjust lip volume to suit this ideal.
- Smoothing wrinkles. Upper lip wrinkles develop over time in both smokers and non-smokers. They can result in lipstick bleed when more evident. When you smile or laugh, wrinkles sometimes develop at the sides of the mouth.Â
The options for non-surgical lip treatment
- Dermal filler injections – these may be used to define the lip border or philtrum, improve asymmetry, add volume or size, and aid lip hydration. They may also be used in very fine amounts to address upper white lip wrinkles.
- Smoothing injections – may be used to add slight projection to the upper lip allowing more vermillion lip to be seen – the ‘lip flip’ – Smoothing injections may also help in reducing upper lip lines
- Laser treatment – erbium laser treatment is an excellent solution for upper lip wrinkles. See ‘Erbium Laser’

The lips are a sensitive area and for comfort during the treatment we recommend:
- Application of topical numbing creams such as Numbit or EMLA 30 minutes prior to treatment and the application of ice during treatment provide good anaesthesia for the injections. These are performed with the smallest 31-gauge needles.
- For upper lip wrinkle treatment, it is usual to perform local anaesthetic injections prior to treatment.
Treatment Choices
Most lip volume treatments at Skin Resus are performed using between ½ and 1ml of product.
This provides pleasing fullness without excessive projection or loss of shape and contour.
Upper lip lines require small amounts and do not result in abnormal upper lip shape.
Post-treatment swelling is often present for 24 – 36 hours and may be managed with ice application or in some cases with anti-inflammatory medication prescribed by our doctors.
