Post treatment swelling and how to treat it

By December 7, 2020February 22nd, 2021No Comments

Have you had a treatment and started to swell? Don’t Panic!

Some treatments may cause marked swelling of the face, particularly around the eyes in the days after the procedure:

When present, swelling may last for up to a week but is generally worse from day 1 – 3 post procedure. It may also be more notable if you have fillers in the treated area – this is most common in the under eye/tear trough area.

Swelling is NOT harmful but may be embarrassing or keep you away from work for longer than expected. So what can you do about it?

RICE

The R.I.C.E principle that you may have heard of for preventing and reducing swelling after an injury is also great for minimising swelling post treatment.

REST from exercise

ELEVATE the head – sleep on 3 pillows

COMPRESS

ICE – cool packs or compresses to the face and under the eyes on and off in the first 24 hours

Medication

Anti-inflammatories such as Nurofen are good for pain but do little for swelling

Anti-histamines such as Telfast or Phenergan may be tried but are often do little to help

Steroids such as prednisolone are the best treatment given in a short 2 – 3 day course – this needs to be prescribed by our doctors
