10 tips reduce mask acne

We’ve managed to live relatively normally in Perth in 2021, but with the increased mask wearing of late a few of our clients are experiencing a surge in “maskne” or mask acne.

Why is my acne worse with a mask?

Your mask, while reducing your risk of spreading or coming in contact with virus particles, is also doing a great job of trapping dead skin cells, makeup, dirt and oils against your skin for an extended period of time, clogging your pores. Add some extra humidity and it’s the perfect recipe for bacteria growth and voila, acne.

For some people, the friction associated with wearing a mask can cause irritation and inflammation which can also contribute to breakouts.

What can I do to reduce the acne?

While we’re wearing masks for extended periods here are a few things you can do to reduce the number of breakouts you’re experiencing:

  1. Wash reusable masks after every use –  it’s a good idea to have a few cloth masks that you can alternate between while you wash the dirty ones.
  2. Throw out disposable masks after each use – it can be tempting to reuse the masks, but for your skin’s sake, throw them out. The RSPCA is urging you to “snip the straps” to reduce the impact on wildlife should the bag tear open at the rubbish tip.
  3. Use a mild exfoliating face wash morning and night – being gentle is key. Try the new Aspect Dr AHA BHA Cleanser or a face wash with a small amount of salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to gently buff away skin cells.
  4. Use acne serums – look for serums that reduce inflammation and have antibacterial benefits such as Aspect Dr Problem Skin Serum or The Ordinary Niacinamide.
  5. Reduce the use of any leave-on salicylic or retinoid products – you may have the urge to increase your use of exfoliating products but they can be too harsh when used in conjunction with a mask and actually lead to more acne. This can extend to rinse-off products like cleansers if your face is very inflamed.
  6. Avoid harsh scrubs – again, being gentle is so important. Rough exfoliating will further irritate already sensitive skin at this time and can exacerbate the condition.
  7. Use a good moisturiser – choose a moisturiser that suits your skin type and use it daily as a barrier. Products containing hyaluronic acid can be extra beneficial right now as they help the skin hold on to even more moisture.
  8. Don’t pick – it can be really tempting to pick at pimples but that freshly popped spot is now an open door for more bacteria to get in!
  9. Go makeup free when you can – if your mask is going to be covering the bottom half of your face all day, consider not putting makeup on! Why not try a dramatic eye look and go au naturale from the nose down?
  10. See Dave, Paula, your GP or skin specialist – if your acne is bothering you and isn’t controlled or at least minimised by these tips, consider seeing your GP for medicated treatments that can combat the bacteria.
